Registration
Validator registration is the first step toward participating in Overlap’s oracle ecosystem. By registering, validators establish their presence, gain eligibility for task assignments, and enter a competitive environment where reputation and accuracy drive success.
Registration links a validator’s address on Ethereum with its performance identity on Arbitrum, locks a deposit on Ethereum, initializes performance metrics cross-chain, and assigns the validator’s initial characteristics. Once finalized, validators appear in the eligibility list and can begin collecting votes to climb the ranks.
For a detailed walkthrough of the registration steps, see How to Become a Validator.
Deposit and Security Model
The validator’s deposit acts as a guarantee of commitment to the protocol.
Deposited ETH is automatically converted into stETH through the Lido protocol and held securely in the Ethereum smart contract.
Staked amounts continue to earn ETH yield from Lido at the prevailing market rate.
Validators can withdraw their deposit at any time, along with the accrued rewards.
Validator registration is a cross-chain process powered by the CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol).
It begins on Ethereum, synchronizes with Arbitrum, and concludes with a final confirmation on Ethereum.
The entire process typically finalizes within ~30 minutes.
All validator funds remain securely on Ethereum (L1) and are never bridged to Arbitrum.
Only validator data and task resolutions are processed on Arbitrum.
Initial Validator State
Once successfully registered, a validator becomes active and visible for user vote delegation.
Each new validator begins with the following default parameters:
| Parameter | Initial Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Index | Maximum | Provides optimal probability for early task assignment. |
| Commission Rate | 20% | Validators retain 20% of task rewards. The remaining 80% is shared with their voters. |
| Votes | 0 | Votes must be earned from users to gain eligibility for tasks. |
Validators can adjust their commission rate at any time to balance incentives and attract more delegations.
Competitive Position
Once registered, validators enter a competitive ecosystem where user votes determine their rank and eligibility for task assignments.
Only the top-ranked validators may be selected for tasks.
Rewards are distributed to both validators and their supporting voters based on task outcomes and performance accuracy.
Success in Overlap depends on building a strong voter base and maintaining consistent, accurate participation in assigned tasks.
